The YMCA of northern BC is asking PG residents to ‘Peace it Forward’ as part of National Peace Week.
The initiative encourages people to take part in random acts of kindness not just through this week, but in everyday life.
“It could be volunteering at a non-profit, it might be donating to a charity,” says Coordinator Stephanie Mikalishen. “It’s as simple as holding the door for someone or paying for a stranger’s drink in the Tim Horton’s lineup, or picking up trash at a park.”
Last year’s campaign saw a peace medallion awarded to Olympian Clara Hughes for her work with mental health awareness, and the 2015 incarnation started today with a free yoga-thon at the YMCA.
“It’s so important, not only for our fitness level, but for our mental health,” add Mikalishen. “It really encourages that holistic wellness, to take a step out from our insanely busy lives, and just take a moment to breathe and remember what’s important in life.”
Peace week will wind up with the National Child Day Celebration on November 21st.
