CNC is building on the success of last spring’s Dream Hunters Walk-Run Group with a new crop of students.
Through Northern Health’s Imagine Legacy Grant, the college can provide personal trainers, shoes, and health seminars for Aboriginal students.
“We believe we should be balanced with a healthy lifestyle, physically, spiritually, mentally,” says Administrative Coordinator Rachelle Munchinsky. “Going to school can be a mental drain, so having some physical activity is a huge part of being balanced.”
Staff and faculty also join the group for outings in an effort to foster relationships.
Munchinsky says the feedback from the program’s first group was overwhelmingly positive.
“I enjoy running because all you need to do is focus on your breathing, relax your body, and look ahead,” said student Vanessa Vandelaar. “Running for me is very therapeutic and stress relieving. Not only does it promote my health, but I have time to clear my thoughts and not think about my studies. When I have a clear mind after my run, I can focus better on my studies.”
All students who choose to participate are eligible for rewards at the end of the program.
