Retirees evacuated after suite fire

Roughly 150 people have been displaced after a fire at the Prince George Château Retirement home.

Emergency crews were called to the building around 9:30 when a chair caught fire in a resident’s suite on the first floor, prompting the evacuation of the whole building onto city buses.

“That person was sent to hospital, and there was one other person on scene who was evaluated in an ambulance on-scene, and she was released,” says Assistant Fire Chief John Heaslip. “We’ve had two other occupants from the buses who have been sent to hospital also with undisclosed issues.”

Heaslip says fire damage was mostly limited to a La-Z-Boy, though there is definite heat and smoke damage throughout the unit.

City staff are on-site evaluating the damage, and residents are unsure if they’ll be able to return to their homes today.

The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined.

All four fire halls attended to the scene.
