The Canadian Cancer Society reminds all women who want a Mammogram should wait until they are 50.
Susan Flynn says the reason behind it is simple.
“Our panels of experts believe the harms of mammograms before 50 outweigh the benefits and that’s why in Canada we recommend you don’t receive one until age 50.”
She says it is also very beneficial to catch breast cancer in it’s early stages.
“We do know that the earlier a woman gets screened for breast cancer the type of treatment and recovery time is much less.”
Mammograms can detect lumps the size of an orange seed and if the tumour is seen the patient undergoes immediate testing.
Flynn says women between the ages of 50 and 69 should get one every two years.
Sometimes mammograms deliver false positive results which can lead to unnecessary follow ups and biopsies.
