11 Pineview Elementary students have earned an all-expense paid trip to Winnipeg for this year’s We Day event!
You can’t buy a ticket for We Day…
They are offered to students who have shown an exceptional amount of empathy and understanding of global issues.
These grade 6 and 7 students supported different initiatives over the past year, even raising roughly $500 through popsicle, teddy bear, and art sales.
Pineview Principal Joyce Willows says parents and teachers had to keep the secret for about a week, before handing the students their tickets at a school assembly.
“We brought everyone in, thanked the whole school for their effort, and thanked them for helpig the PGSS students with their Me to We program and funding for Sierra Leone, ” says Principal Joyce Willows. “Then we called them up and we said “By the way, you’re going on an all-expense paid trip to Manitoba!”
Once the initial shock soaked in, and the students watched clips from previous We-Days, many of the students were in tears.
“A lot of the teachers were almost in tears because this is a life-changing event!” Added Willows, “All of these kids have so much passion for other people, and really want to make a difference in their school, community, and the world. I think they really knew that this is going to be so amazing.”
The young people of Prince George are no strangers to such recognition.
Earlier in October, students from PGSS, College Heights, DP Todd and College Heights travelled to Vancouver We Day, where they heard from the event founders, Olympians, and musicians like Hedley and the Barenaked Ladies.
Manitoba’s incarnation of We Day will bring thousands of students from across Canada to Winnipeg’s MTS Centre on November 16th for a day of performances and motivational speeches.
