The Prince George branch of the Canadian Cancer Society is giving the city’s anti-smoking and vaping bylaw two thumbs up.
Health Promotion Coordinator, Megan Klitch, says the issue surrounding smoking by-laws has gained traction over the past year.
“Last year at this time we had no outdoor tobacco by-laws in Northern BC. Now Dawson Creek and Williams Lake took action and now Prince George and Quesnel are in the process of seeing a by-law go through.”
Klitch adds the smoking rate in the North is higher than the provincial average.
“We have a smoking rate of 14.3 percent in BC and it’s the lowest in Canada. In the north however we are about 10 percent higher than the rest of the province so it’s a really progressive move by the city.”
Including E-cigarettes in the bylaw would help prevent youth from using them.
