Students netting big bucks in SD57 awards program

Students in School District 57 took home more than $340,000 in scholarships and bursaries last year!

At tonight’s board meeting, Trustee Trish Bella thanked the 129 donors that helped 234 students earn the awards.

110 students received $1000 Dogwood/District Authority scholarships that schools awarded an additional $26,150 in bursaries and scholarships.

While the number of awards available from 2014 to 2015 decreased slightly, School District 57’s Cindy Heitman says it’s actually a good thing.

“You look at the number of awards actually awarded and you can see there is a decrease from last year. You may think ‘Oh, what happened?’, when that is actually a good news story,” says Learning Innovation District Principal Cindy Heitman. “Unclaimed awards are moved into our recognition awards… So last year, we utilized unclaimed awards to provide additional recognition awards. So the fact that there’s a decrease means more students actually claimed the money they were awarded earlier in the year.”

Minor changes to the School District Awards program were also announced.

The District Authority Scholarships have added indigenous language and culture to its areas of recognition, while a few smaller awards (graduation program scholarships and passport to education) are being phased out.

The final allocation of these awards will be to the graduates of 2015/2016.

The District Award Programs are also available to students in McBride, Mackenzie, and Valemount.
