DP Todd Trojans to play for 5th at TRU Wolfpack Howler Tournament

The DP Todd Men’s Senior Volleyball team is aiming to raise their provincial ranking at the TRU Wolfpack Howler Tournament.

The Trojans went two-and-one in round robin play Friday.. before crushing Penticton’s Princess Margaret Mustangs in straight sets early Saturday morning.

Assistant Coach Cole Waldie says the team’s defense has been a huge factor in their success.

“Our tallest guy is 6’2, and there’s a lot of teams where the smallest guy is 6’2. So our passing has had to come a long way, and same with our blocking. We’re so small, you’ve got to block a lot of balls. But passing and blocking have really turned into our strengths.”

The Trojans are also considered tough competition on a provincial level.

“We’re the honourable mention right now, but if we win today, our ranking could go up quite a bit, just because we’ll finish in the top tier. There are a couple teams ranked ahead of us in the bottom tier. It’s looking good for us right now,” explains Waldie. “It’s huge for us, because you really want to get in the top eight going into provincials so we can get that easy crossover game. That’s our main goal right now. Get the number one seed in the City, win the zone title, and head into provs in the top eight.”

The Trojans would end up falling 29-27 in a heartbreaker against the 2nd place provincially ranked Clarence Fulton Maroons.

But in less than a month, DP Todd will be back in PG, defending their title as City Zone Champions.
