Capitals fall in overtime to Greater Vancouver dashing championship hopes

The impressive playoff run by the Northern Capitals came to a heartbreaking end in the Lower Mainland.

Carolyn Koo’s game-winning goal at 7:39 of overtime pushed the Greater Vancouver Comets to a 4-3 win, clinching the two-game sweep in the best-of-three BC Elite Hockey League U18 Female Finals on Saturday.

Affiliate player Maddy Niesh scored twice for the Caps to give the visitors a 2-1 edge after 20 minutes.

The Comets pushed back hard in the second with a pair of goals of their own. Koo and Kirsten Lai were able solve Caps netminder Payton Planetta to give the first-seed their first lead of the contest.

But, the edge lasted less than four minutes as Windsor Lancers commit Staysha Hiebert evened the score at 3-3.

Greater Vancouver outshot the Capitals 32-21.

Saturday’s defeat marked the final game in a Capitals jersey for Hiebert, Planetta, Gabby Meier, Lauren Baker, Sarah Prestmo, Breanna Hunter, Paige Cheek and Aliyah Hart.

Meier committed to Red Deer College to play with former teammates Knyla Evans, Camryn Ward and Penelope Johnson.

Baker on the other hand, is set to play junior hockey in Alberta with the Edmonton Wolves.

The Wolves who have Capital grads Keegan Goulet and Kiera Mulder claimed back-to-back championships in the Alberta Junior Female Hockey League on Saturday.
