WHL:

Prince George Cougars  4  Victoria Royals  3  (OT-Saturday)

The PG Cougars all-time leading goal scorer, Koehn Ziemmer, tallied the winner at 2:14 of overtime before 5,946 fans at CN Centre.

It was his team leading 37th goal of the season.

Ziemmer is the all-time leader in game-winning goals for the Cougars.

Victoria Royals  6  Prince George Cougars  3  (Friday)

The (41-21-4-2) Cougars finished second in the BC Division and 4th in the Western Conference.

They host the (36-28-3-1) Portland Winterhawks Friday and Saturday in the first two games of their first round series.

The Winterhawks won all four regular season meetings between the two teams, although they have not met in over three months (since Dec. 13th).

P.G. was 24-5-3-2 on home ice this season while Portland was 17-14-2-1 on the road.

WHL expansion:

The Western Hockey League announced today (Monday) the awarding of an expansion franchise to the Penticton Vees for the 2025-26 WHL season along with the initiation of a franchise application process for the City of Chilliwack, to begin play in the 2026-27  season.

The (21-25-4-2) Spruce Kings are three points behind the (21-22-8-1) Langley Rivermen for the 8th and final playoff spot in the BCHL Interior Conference.

Both Prince George and Langley have two games left.

The Spruce Kings will host the (9-37-5-1) Powell River Kings Saturday night at 6:00 and Sunday afternoon at 3:00.

The Rivermen host the (26-19-5-2)  Coquitlam Express Friday night at 7:15 and the (35-12-5) Chilliwack Chiefs Saturday night at 7:15.

NHL: (7 Sunday games with 1 Canadian team in action)

Buffalo  5  Winnipeg  3

The (32-26-12) Vancouver Canucks, with just 12 games left, continue a 6-game road trip tonight (4:30) against the (37-28-6) New Jersey Devils.

It is one of four Monday games in the NHL.

Vancouver is five points behind the (37-28-7) St. Louis Blues for the 2nd and final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

The (33-25-11) Calgary Flames are four back of St. Louis with three games in hand.

Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals visit the Winnipeg Jets Tuesday.

The 39-year-old Ovechkin is 7 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career record of 894.

The (47-15-8) Caps, who have the best record in the NHL, have 12 regular season games remaining.

Curling:

Canada’s Team Rachel Homan has repeated as world women’s curling champions.

Team Homan of Ottawa defeated Switzerland’s Team Silvana Tirinzoni 7-3 in Sunday’s gold-medal game in South Korea.

The victory marks back-to-back world championships for Homan, vice-skip Tracy Fleury, second Emma Miskew, lead Sarah Wilkes, alternate Rachelle Brown, and national coaches Viktor Kjell and Renée Sonnenberg.

They are the first Canadian team to repeat as world champions since Sandra Schmirler’s team in 1993 and 1994.

San Antonio Spurs  123  Toronto Raptors  89

The (24-47) Raptors, with just 11 games remaining (4 home and 7 away), visit the (15-55) Washington Wizards tonight (Monday 4:00).

Toronto is 6 games behind the (30-41) Miami Heat for the final play-in spot in the Eastern Conference.
