The Independent Investigations Office of BC is investigating an incident in Quesnel where one person sustained a serious injury while being taken into custody by members of the RCMP back on January 6,2024.
In a release, the IIO stated officers responded to call about a person experiencing a mental health emergency.
Police eventually located the person on Avison Avenue and detained the individual under the Mental Health Act.
They were then taken to a hospital for assessment where it was determined they suffered an injury during the interaction with police.
The IIO was notified last month after the woman filed a complaint with the RCMP.
After reviewing medical records, the police watchdog stated it has been determined the injury meets the threshold of serious harm as defined in the Police Act.
Investigative steps will seek to confirm the details leading up to and including the interaction with police, as well as whether any force used was necessary, proportionate, and justified under the circumstances.
