The Prince George Agriplex will be closed over the next couple of weeks due to a confirmed case of Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EVH-1).
EVH-1 is a highly contagious virus that affects horses, and can lead to severe respiratory and neurological issues.
Kate Peebles, President of the Prince George Horse Society says it started at a different facility.
“One of the horses from the Agriplex actually shared a trailer. Wasn’t even in the trailer with one of the exposed horses, just went in the following day.”
“Then that horse was brought into the Agriplex, and once we realized that was happening, that horse and any other horse that horse was in direct contact with was isolated.”
Peebles says after multiple tests were done, with the latest one on Tuesday, the case was confirmed, with the horse and facility under quarantine.
While the goal is to open after quarantine, she says if another horse is infected, the quarantine process will have to restart for another 14 days.
Peebles notes she isn’t optimistic in opening at the end of the current 14 day period.
The Prince George Horse Society said in a Facebook post to contact your vet if you were in attendance at the Agriplex, and will be posting updates when available.
