Blood moon will be visible in Prince George tonight

Anyone willing to stay up in Prince George may be able to see the moon in a different colour.

Tonight will be a blood moon, also known as a lunar eclipse, which will be visible across Prince George and the majority of the western hemisphere.

Malhar Kendurkar, the President of the Prince George Astronomical Observatory, talks about what a lunar eclipse is.

“A lunar eclipse basically occurs when we have the Sun, Earth, and the Moon aligned, and the moon actually passes into Earth’s shadow, but tonight we’re actually kind of lucky, because it will be a total lunar eclipse.”

Kendurkar says when the moon is completely in the Earth’s shadow, also known as an umbra, it makes the moon appear orange-ish and red, giving it the name blood moon.

He says it will start at 9:57pm, with the total lunar eclipse at 12:58am, adding the observatory will be open for people to view it.

The last total lunar eclipse was around November 2022, with the next one between March 3rd and 5th 2026.
