Prince George athlete brings home hardware from judo competition overseas

A Prince George athlete was on the international stage for judo, and didn’t leave empty handed.

Carla Van Zyl competed in a two week European Judo Tour, representing Team Canada, where she fought in the under 21 Malaga Junior European Cup in Spain, and was 2 and 2.

The team then went to Portugal to compete in the Portimao Junior European Cup March 8-9, where Carla fought on Sunday, winning a Bronze medal.

Results can be found here.

“This is the first medal that a female athlete from BC has won at a European Cup in over 20 years!!! And the first for a local athlete ever.” said Head Instructor at the Hart Judo Academy, Bruce Kamstra.

Carla, along with Maegan Grooten will represent the Hart Judo Academy and Canada at the Junior Pan Am Championships in Peru next month.
