School District 57 spoke with community members about Giscome Elementary School, and it’s potential closure during Monday’s meeting.
The District shared information with parents and others in the community the rationale for the recommendation, sharing enrollment history, and concerns around the quality of the educational program.
Superintendent Jameel Aziz says there was consensus in the room that this was the best decision.
“We actually heard from parents who, for the most part, agreed with our decision that the quality of the education program really has been lacking as the school went from a high of 31 students in the past decade or so, to the 4 or 7 now.”
A big question asked by attendees was about the building itself, which Aziz says they only own one-third of the building, with the Regional District owning the remaining portion.
He adds the building wont be shuttered in any way, as it’s not their building to shutter.
Conversations were had with the community on working with the Regional District’s CAO on what happens to the building, how it can be utilized by individuals, and more.
The feedback period will go until April 4th, and will be received by the Board on April 16th, with the final decision to be made April 22nd.
