25 per cent tariffs have been put in place by US President Donald Trump, after its month long delay.
Canadian goods across-the-board entering the United States saw the tariffs take effect at 12:01 a.m.
Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Neil Godbout says when buying local here in Prince George, we can think of it as both made in BC and Canada.
“Even if it’s not necessarily fully made in Canada, are we supporting a Canadian business that in terms of assembling the product, had to buy parts from the United States or elsewhere, it doesn’t matter.
“If you’re still supporting Canadian jobs, then that’s also a good thing.”
Godbout adds that in every chaos, springs opportunity, addressing long standing things like interprovincial trade.
“Lets clean up our own house, lets look at ways to improve our productivity, lets look at ways that we can collaborate and partner more.”
“This is where we need to think of Team Prince George, and what Team Prince George can bring to Team Canada and Team BC in terms of a response.”
He says these tariffs will also be felt by businesses, such as when needing new equipment, it may need to be stretched out, or will need to be purchased elsewhere like Europe or here in Canada.
While that might come at a higher cost, Godbout says we would be taking care of our own.
