February comes in as average weather-wise in Prince George

February turned out to be pretty average for the Prince George area weather-wise.

According to Environment Canada Meteorologist Colin Fong, the month was a tale of two different situations.

“In the first half of February, we had cold arctic air plunge BC into that deep freeze, and then in mid-February, it was like someone flipped a switch and temperatures quickly climbed above normal,” he said.

“This sudden change was because that cold arctic air finally moved out of the region, and we began to see some weather systems come back in from the Pacific Ocean.”

Fong said those systems brought in milder air, which helped raise temperatures.

“We had an average of +1 as the daytime high, and an average of -8 for our overnight lows,” he explained.

“That actually is fairly close to the normals for the period of February, which is -1 for daytime highs and -10 for nighttime lows.”

In terms of precipitation, February was very close to average as well.

“We saw about 28 millimetres of precipitation, so that’s kind of that rain-snow mix put together,” Fong said.

“When we compare that to our typical, normal precipitation we expect for February, that number is about 30 millimetres.”

Looking ahead, Fong said we can continue to expect milder temperatures, but we’re not completely out of the winter woods just yet.

“As we go forward into March, we are kind of marching our way towards spring, so generally speaking, we would be expecting milder weather as we also are crawling our way out of winter,” he said.

“In this kind of transition, we’re going to see a rain-snow mix with the weather going forward.”

Fong said we may get some snow on Wednesday, with rain potentially to follow on the weekend.
