PG voters crank up the heat with leap in turnout

Voter turnout is taking steps in the right direction nationally, and right here at home.

While a national voter turnout of 68.5 % doesn’t sound so impressive, a 7 % jump from 2011 means 2.45 million more people cast a ballot in October.

In other words, this was the highest voter turnout Canada has seen since 1993.

2011 saw 43,518 valid votes in the Cariboo-Prince George, with Election 42 bringing in 53,271.

The last federal election had 171 rejected ballots, though Monday’s statistics on that front haven’t been released.

Even more impressive was the 45 percent bump in advance poll voting in the riding, with 9,981 people casting a ballot over the Thanksgiving long weekend.

The extra day of voting made an impact, nearly doubling the 4,993 advance votes from 2011.

Adjusting that number for population growth, that is still and approximate 45 % growth in early turnout.
