CNC programs axed following challenges caused by federal changes

The College of New Caledonia Board approved the cancellation of multiple programs, affecting students and staff.

Discussions were held around funding, community needs and student enrolment of the Associate Arts – Modern Classics, English Language, and Community and School Support programs, leading their cancellation.

President and CEO, Cindy Heiatman says changes that the federal government made with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada impacted the school.

“We’re seeing a rather drastic decline in enrolment, as international students aren’t choosing to come to Canada in general, and when enrolment is impacted, so is our revenue.”

“We are seeing a revenue decrease of approximately $7 million.”

Heiatman says work to review the programs began in November, taking roughly a month for the entire process of cancelling a program.

In a statement, Chair, Shoba Sharma said This decision was not made lightly, and we understand the impact it will have on students, employees, and the broader community.”

“Our mandate is to ensure that CNC’s programs continue to meet regional needs and are financially sustainable. The Board believes this step is necessary to ensure the College’s long-term viability and ability to provide quality education to future generations of learners.”

CNC will be working with students impacted to ensure they have the support to complete their studies and courses, transfer to other CNC programs, or explore other possible educational pathways.

Additionally, they will follow the process outlined in the collective agreement to inform and support impacted employees to reduce potential job loss.

Cancellations of the programs will take place the next academic year.
