Two researchers will represent UNBC at the Science Meets Parliament – BC program

Two UNBC researchers were selected to attend the two-day Science Meets Parliament – BC program in Victoria.

The initiative is a way to enhance connections between scientific and political communities in the province, and promote mutual understanding.

Ecosystem Science and Management Assistant Professor, Dr. Samuel Bartels says it’s an opportunity to be at the table and bridge gaps.

“Where’s the evidence is coming from, how so, and how we might help in areas they may be struggling for evidence or even point them to the right resources.”

“If it’s something related to my field expertise, I’ll be more than happy to chip in.”

Both Dr. Bartels and Chemistry Assistant Professor, Dr. Kalindi Morgan have attended virtual training sessions, conveying the understanding that the program is about building relationships between scientists and politicians, rather than lobbying or an activist.

Dr. Morgan explains what she hopes comes out of this initiative.

“The biggest impact or outcome that I would like to have is simply connections between myself, as a University Assistant Professor, and with MLA’s in our Parliament, and a little bit of understanding.”

Dr. Morgan adds they’re not going there asking for anything, but rather have conversations and have an understanding of the political perspective.

Drs. Bartels and Morgan, along with 25 other research leaders, will attend the program on April 28th and 29th.
