City of Prince George sees strong start to Provincial Housing Target Order

Prince George City Council were provided an update into the Housing Target Order (HTO) set by the province on Monday night.

The staff report provides a six-month update into the 5-year long project that began August 1st 2024, which aims to see 1803 new housing units.

Director of Development Services, Deanna Wasnik says the City is nearing the year one target of 273.

“It is, in my opinion, really great news. The first six months of the HTO, there’s a total of 210 net new housing units that were completed in the City, representing 77 per cent of the total year one target.”

Wasnik credits a part of the success to timing, and projects that were already in the works.

“Prior to the Housing Target Order commencing on August 1st 2024, we had a number of construction projects underway. When those units wrap up and get their occupancy permits, those will count towards our order.”

The next yearly targets include:

  • Year 2 – 303
  • Year 3 – 346
  • Year 4 – 404
  • Year 5 – 478

The next update will be given within 45 days after the first year mark (August 1st, 2025) with following reports given annually, rather than six months.

Other topics discussed at the Council meeting include the temporary use permit for supportive housing at Pinewood Avenue, and funding for a new playground at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park.
