WHL:

The Prince George Cougars have a home and home this weekend against the (21-31-4-1) Kamloops Blazers.

The two teams meet tonight (Friday) at 7:00 at CN Centre and tomorrow night at 6:00 in Kamloops.

The Blazers are sitting three points out of the 8th and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The (33-19-4-2) Cougars are second in the B.C. Division, five points behind the (34-15-3-6) Victoria Royals with both teams having 10 regular season games remaining; 5 home and 5 away.

The Cougars schedule includes four games against Wenatchee, two each against Kamloops and Victoria and one each against Vancouver and Everett.

The Royals schedule includes two games each against Vancouver, Portland, Spokane and Prince George, and one each against Kamloops and Kelowna.

The Spruce Kings continue a 3-game road trip when they visit the (26-14-3) Surrey Eagles tonight at 7:00 and the (24-13-7) Salmon Arm Silverbacks Sunday afternoon at 4:00.

The (17-23-3-1) Spruce Kings are four points behind the (17-20-7-1) Langley Rivermen for the 8th and final playoff spot in the BCHL Interior Conference with P.G. holding one game in hand.

Prince George has 10 games left (5 home and 5 away) while Langley has 9 remaining (5 home and 4 away).

Langley will play a doubleheader in P.G. on March 7th and 8th.

NHL: (12 Thursday games with 5 Canadian teams in action)

The (27-21-11) Canucks conclude a 5-game road trip Saturday night at 7 in Seattle.

Vancouver is one point ahead of the (28-22-8) Calgary Flames for the 2nd and final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

Alex Ovechkin did not pick up a point in the Washington Capitals 5-2 loss on Thursday to the St. Louis Blues.

The 39-year-old Ovechkin is just 12 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career record of 894.

The (38-13-8) Caps have 23 regular season games left.

BC Elite Hockey League: 

The first place Under-18 Cariboo Cougars are preparing for the B.C. Elite Hockey League playoffs.

They will host the last place Thompson Blazers in the first round which is the league quarterfinals.

The (26-6-3-1) U-18 Cougars face the Blazers in a best-of-3 series; Friday, March 7th at 6 PM, Saturday, March 8th at 5:45 PM and if needed Sunday, March 9th at 11:15 AM.

All games are at Kin 2 (as a speedskating event will be held that weekend at Kin 1).

High School Basketball:

Prince George and Northern B.C. teams are competing this week at the B.C. High School Girls Basketball Provincial Championships in Langley.

Duchess Park has advanced to the 3A semi-finals following a 62-59 victory over Mark R. Isfeld Ice.

College Heights will play for 5th and 6th on Saturday.

Nechako Valley and Hazelton are 0-3 and will play for 15th and 16th in 2A.

The Toronto Raptors continue a 4-game road trip tonight (Friday 5:00) against the (23-36) Bulls in Chicago.

The (18-41) Raptors are 5 games behind the Bulls, who hold down the last play-in spot in the Eastern Conference.

Curling:

The Montana’s Brier begins tonight and continues through March 9th in Kelowna.

The winner will represent Canada at the world men’s curling championship that will be held in Moose Jaw from March 29th to April 6th.
