The Vanderhoof RCMP are warning people about a scam after a resident lost a significant amount of money.
According to police, the victim was contacted and asked to help out with a bank sting operation. The caller spoofed the Vanderhoof detachment’s phone number and claimed to be a member.
The victim, believing the RCMP was on the other end of the line, was directed to remove funds from their personal account and then deposit the funds in specific ATM’s in Prince George where the funds would be converted to Bit Coin. The victim was then provided with a QR code that was forwarded to the scammers.
The RCMP reminds the public they will not, ask for assistance with any investigations in relation to banks or transference of money. Anyone who receives this type of call, should hang up, do not provide any information and report it to the police.
