With flu season right around the corner, Northern Health is reminding residents to take the proper precautions.
Simple steps include stocking up on tissues and hand sanitizer. The number one way to prevent influenza is by getting vaccinated.
“The flu infection is actually an infection of the upper airway caused by the influenza virus” said Katherine Germuth with Northern Health. “Getting sick from it can put you at higher risk for other infections”
The risk for infection is greater for children, seniors and those suffering from chronic health problems.
“Flu cases result in approximately 12,200 hospitalizations on average and about 3,500 deaths in Canada every year” said Germuth. “It is quite serious, so we like to get some information about flu season out to the public.”
The Influenza Vaccine will be available throughout the province by November 2nd.
To locate a clinic where the vaccine is available, visit the Immunize BC website.
