Hundreds attend monthly healing fire at the Prince George Courthouse

Nazko First Nation hosted this months Healing Fire in Prince George yesterday (Wednesday).

The event is hosted by different organizations, and is helped put on by the Carrier Sekani Family Services outside the Courthouse, supporting the homeless population.

Family Preservation Housing Outreach Coordinator, Akhil Kumar says it’s very important for everyone to have a safe space without bias or judgement.

“They just walk in to that space to have a meal, enjoy some music, the drumming, we also do smudging at the healing fire, and also have support services.”

“That just helps build the warm space for everyone.”

Kumar says people have found their family members at the fire, adding it’s a very emotional and amazing moment to witness.

Other supports provided are Mental Health and Wellness workers, hygiene supplies, clothing, hand warmers, which come from donations.

He says Carrier Sekani puts out newsletters detailing donation requests, but are always needing socks, outerwear, and handwarmers.

Kumar notes when they send out posters and invitations, they get exciting feedback, with some remembering to go monthly.

He says the people attending even help with set up and clean up from the event.

Yesterday’s event brought together 250 to 300 people, which Kumar says is about average during the winter.

The next healing fire is scheduled for March 12th, from 11:00am to 2:00pm.
