Quick start drives Cougars to victory over Kamloops

The first period made all the difference as the Prince George Cougars picked up a 3-2 win over the Kamloops Blazers.

“I thought our first was great, not just the scoreboard, but the emotion, the intensity and sticking to details, it pays off,” said assistant coach Carter Rigby on the 94.3 the Goat post-game show.

“As the game got on, it was a tight-knit game, they’re missing a lot of guys out of their line up but they work and they compete, so all in all, it’s nice to get those points that are key right now.”

All three of the Cougars goals came in the opening frame, with Matteo Danis opening the scoring a little less than a minute into the game.

Kamloops answered back with a goal of their own, but Riley Heidt and Patrick Sopiarz put the Cougars back up 3-1 in the period.

“It was nice to see Danis to get one, Soaps to get one too, just some other guys jumping in and helping out, and ultimately, thankfully the three held out and Rav backed us up for the rest of the game and made sure we got the two points,” Rigby said.

Josh Ravensbergen put up another stellar goaltending display, making 31 saves in the win.

While the first period saw plenty of action, the second and third were fairly quiet for the 4,286 at the Sandman Centre.

It was also a clean game, with the Cougars going to the penalty box just twice, while the Blazers took just one penalty.
