Health Ministry investigating trafficking of prescription opioids in BC

An investigation by a special Health Ministry unit says a “significant portion” of the opioids being prescribed in our province are being diverted to others.

The report, leaked by the B-C Conservatives, says opioids being freely prescribed by doctors and pharmacists are not being consumed by their intended recipients.

Health Minister Josie Osborne confirms that such an investigation is under way, but adds the leak of the report may harm possible prosecutions.

The report also alleges a scheme involving “incentives” paid by pharmacies to patients, doctors and housing providers.

The next step in this situation would be for law enforcement agencies to target specific pharmacies for a more complete investigation.
