PG homeless shelters to see increased foot traffic during freezing temperatures

With Prince George stuck in its first extended cold snap of the winter, our homeless shelters will be in high demand.

BC Housing has listed the locations where some of our most vulnerable can access during this time:

  • Active Support Against Poverty (6th Avenue)
  • Association Advocating for Women and Community (AWAC), (144 George Sreet)
  • Prince George Native Friendship Centre (PGNFC), Men 19+ (140 Quebec Street)
  • PGNFC, All Clients 19+ (1151 2nd Avenue)

Other locations people can access include:

  • Ketso Yoh men’s shelter (160 Quebec Street)
  • The Fire Pit (1120 3rd Avenue)
  • Hadih House (2105 Pine Street)
  • Natsoolyis’ Warming Centre (CINHS), 393 George Street Mon to Fri: 9 a.m. – 10 p.m., Sat/Sun: 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • AWAC Warming Centre (at St. Vincent de Paul), 1220 2nd Ave Nightly from 9 p.m. – 7 a.m.
  • BC Schizophrenia Society, 1139 6th Avenue Tues and Wed: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Council of Seniors*, 1330 5th Avenue Mon to Wed: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. *Note that the Council of Seniors serves seniors only.

During extreme cold events, the City of Prince George emergency programs team collaborates with community outreach agencies to reduce the risks and impacts to vulnerable populations.

The City’s emergency programs division distributes Ministry of Emergency Management & Climate Readiness (EMCR) funding to ensure service providers can operate with extended hours as warming centres and provide food, water, and other supplies.

This year, EMCR funding allowed staff to create 200 warming kits that include blankets, toques, gloves, socks, and hand warmers that have been provided to each warming centre to hand out.

Today’s (Tuesday) daytime is -16 degrees with sunny skies with the overnight low dipping to -28.
