Road Safety at Work reminding drivers of icy road safety

As freezing temperatures seem to be more consistent, drivers are needing to stay aware of icy roads.

Road Safety at Work said when roads are iced over, drivers need to watch for others sliding into your path, not just yourself.

They add road conditions, weather, and behaviour of other drivers can be unpredictable.

A major hazard during freezing weather is black ice, which usually forms on shaded roads, and is difficult to spot which could lead to serious crashes and possible injuries.

Road Safety at Work noted to drive below the speed limit when conditions aren’t favourable, and if your vehicle starts to skid, ease off the accelerator and steer gently in the desired direction.

Other tips provided include postponing the trip if possible, check road, weather, and traffic conditions, having winter tires, and have plenty of time for the trip if choosing to go.

More information and tips can be found through Road Safety at Work’s Winter Driving Safety campaign website here.
