Police charge 23-year-old man following fatal shooting in Dawson Creek

A 23-year-old man has been charged with second degree murder after a weekend shooting in Dawson Creek claimed the life of one person, while another remains in hospital.

Nolan Douglas Schmidt remains in custody until his next court date later today (Thursday).

The RCMP responded to a shots fired call just after 11pm on Sunday.

Police say this was not a random attack and those involved are known to each other.

Investigators are also looking at other ongoing investigations within the Dawson Creek area and progress continues to be made

“The surge of resources that supported the investigation contributed to an arrest and subsequent charge approval. Additional charges may be possible if supported by further evidence as the investigation moves forward,” said Superintendent Sanjaya Wijayakoon of E Division Major Crime.

Due to the recent gang violence in the Peace Region, a larger police presence from across the province will be deployed to Dawson Creek.

This will include North District General Investigation Section (NDGIS), Uniformed Gang Enforcement Team (UEGT), E Division Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) and members from surrounding detachments.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Dawson Creek detachment.
