About 20 BC Wildfire firefighters, including four from the Northwest Fire Centre, are in California assisting with the Los Angeles fires.
Crews went down last Thursday (Jan. 16) and will return at the end of the month.
“These are front line personnel highly experienced, highly skilled and trained to the highest national standard,” said Provincial Fire Information Officer Erika Berg.
She added relations with the California wildfire teams have been developing for the past three years with some of their firefighters assisting in BC.
“We also support Australia and have a good relationship with them. Given that their fire seasons are opposite to ours, we’ve had years where they reach out and see who’s available to support,” Berg said.
Calls for assistance go through the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, which are then answered by services like BC Wildfire to send resources.
