School District 57 will be reviewing structures and practices related to Truth and Reconciliation.
During last night’s (Tuesday) meeting, Trustees were given a presentation from the office of the Superintendent that also included equity of access, learning, and wellness.
Superintendent Jameel Aziz says long term work will be done for Indigenous Involvement.
“We have these board meetings in a board room with Robert’s Rules of Order, and some very limited structures in the way that people can participate.”
“We know as a school system that although we are doing a good overall job, we have some of our rights holders and their children who we are not having the right success for.”
Aziz says they want to bring people together for conversations around what they can do as a system to remove barriers, have active engagement, and to be more welcoming.
While this work is in its preliminary stages, he says a meeting will be held in March with various partners such as Mayors, Northern Health, UNBC, CNC, and more.
Aziz includes Mayors from Prince George, Mackenzie, Valemount, and McBride.
He says this work won’t really have an end goal, but something that will most likely evolve and change over time.
