Homelessness Action Week Underway

The BC Government is trying to raise awareness and generate support around the issue of homelessness in BC.

The Province has officially declared it Homelessness Action Week this week to acknowledge organizations that help fight the issue of homelessness.

“There’s a lot of invisible homelessness in our community” said City Council Member Murry Krause. “People who are either hanging on by their fingernails from month-to-month in the housing they currently have, or they’re sleeping on other people’s couches.”

He says raising awareness about issues that contribute to homelessness is also important.

“There’s a lot of people who do have full time jobs but their salaries still end up having them below the poverty level” said Krause. “I think it’s important to acknowledge that there are a lots of actively employed people who find themselves in a crisis situation.”

Krause encourages citizens to continue donating to local agencies that provide for the less fortunate such as the Salvation Army.

Homelessness Action Week runs until October 17th.
