It was a post-holiday hangover for both UNBC basketball teams to kick off 2025.
The Timberwolves came up empty during a pair of double-headers down in the Lower Mainland over the weekend.
In women’s action, UNBC (3-7) fell 51-40 to the Fraser Valley Cascades on Friday and then dropped a 97-47 decision to the UBC Thunderbirds.
On Friday, UNBC kept it close against the Cascades but were unable to score more than 10 points per quarter in the defeat.
Viktoriia Filatova tallied a team-high 9 points off the bench for the Timberwolves going 4-for-10 shooting.
Fraser Valley (9-3) was led by Maddy Gobeil who posted a game-high 16 points in 33 minutes of action and was a monster on the glass recording 15 rebounds.
UNBC was outrebounded 52-31 in the contest.
The following night (Saturday), UBC built up a 53-29 halftime edge before coasting to a 50-point victory.
Third-year German forward Mona Berlitz had a night to remember for the Thunderbirds going 8-for-12 on field goals to go along with a 26-point, seven-rebound performance.
Jessica Clarke and Olivia Weekes added 16 and 12 points each in a supporting role for UBC (10-1).
For the second straight game, Filatova led the Timberwolves in points with 18. UNBC committed 31 turnovers while also getting outrebounded 50-24.
Veteran guard Sarah Kuklisin remains out of the UNBC lineup due to injury.
On the men’s side, the Timberwolves fell 90-58 against the Cascades (5-7) on Friday and then fell 88-59 the next night to UBC (Saturday).
Fraser Valley saw six of its players reach double-digit points including who an efficient night with 15 points and 11 rebounds in 21 minutes of action.
Evgeny Baukin hooped 19 points in defeat for the T-Wolves.
On Saturday, rookie Isaiah Bias had a game to remember in a losing effort for UNBC tallying 19 points including a 7-for-12 showing on field goals.
Chris Ainsley also had 13 points and six rebounds.
UBC was led by Adam Olsen, Nikola Guzina and, Victor Radocaj who all had 15 points or more.
The Thunderbirds (8-3) converted 39% from three-point range while UNBC was just 18.8%.
UNBC (1-9) was without starting guard and post players Will Keyes and Justin Sunga for the entire weekend.
The Timberwolves are back on home court Thursday when they welcome the Victoria Vikes to the Northern Sports Centre.
Victoria is 10-0 on the men’s side while the women are 5-5. Games are set for 6pm and 8pm
