Prince George hosts top skaters at Canadian Junior Short Track Open

Kin 1 was the host of the Canadian Junior Short Track Open this weekend, with some of the best Canadian Speed Skaters between the ages of 16 and 18 competing.

“The weekend’s gone really well, it’s phenomenal to see skaters of this level back in Prince George after ten years,” James McIntosh, President of PG Blizzard Speed Skating Club.

“The last competition that we had at the national level was the Canada Winter Games in 2015, so it’s long overdue to have high level speed skating back in PG.”

McIntosh noted the Kin 1 arena is one of the only rinks in BC capable of holding an event like this, due to it being an Olympic-sized arena. He added they may put a bid to host the event again in the future.

This weekend’s competition featured one local athlete, Pareesa Jones.

“Pareesa’s been doing awesome, she shows up, she works hard, she puts in the effort week in and week out, and she’s now competing for the third time at the national level,”

“It just goes to show how much of a hard working young woman that she is, and she’s fearless.”

Full results can be found here.

The competitions served as qualifiers for the Canadian Junior Finals and Canada Cup one.
