WHL: 

Prince George Cougars  6  Vancouver Giants  5

In his first game in a P.G. uniform, Ben Riche scored the game-winner with just 47 seconds left in the 3rd period to snap a 5-5 tie to the delight of 3,123 fans at CN Centre.

The Cougars tied the game a minute earlier when Terik Parascak tallied with the goalie pulled for an extra attacker.

The 19-year-old Riche was acquired Wednesday morning from the Saskatoon Blades for 18-year-old forward Hunter Laing, a first-round draft pick in 2026, a 5th round pick in 2028 and a 15-year-old prospect.

Riche was the Blades leading scorer this season with 54 points, including 23 goals, in 37 games this season with Saskatoon.

The WHL trading deadline is tonight (Thursday) at 5:00.

Prince George also beat the Giants on Tuesday 4-2 before 2,899 hometown fans.

The (24-10-3-2) Cougars visit the (14-18-2-1) Kelowna Rockets Friday night at 7:00 and the (13-21-3) Kamloops Blazers Saturday night at 6:00.

P.G. leads the B.C. Division by four points over the (21-11-3-4) Victoria Royals.

The (10-17-3-1) Prince George Spruce Kings host the (19-11-1) Alberni Valley Bulldogs Friday night at 7:00 and Saturday night at 6:00.

The Saturday game is Indigenous Night.

The Spruce Kings are 9th out of 10 in the Coastal Conference, two points behind the (12-17-2) Nanaimo Clippers.

Cariboo Cougars:

The (17-3-1-1) Under-18 Cariboo Cougars visit the (9-11-2-2) Vancouver North East Chiefs Saturday afternoon at 3:30 and Sunday morning at 10:45 in Burnaby.

The U-18 Cougars are in first place in the BC Elite Hockey League.

Speedskating:

The Prince George Blizzard Speed Skating Club hosts the best 16–18 year-old speed skaters in Canada this weekend for the Canadian Junior Short Track Open at Kin 1.

Skaters from across the country are entered (including Pareesa Jones of the host PG club).

The competition serves as a qualifier for Canada Cup 1 in Sherbrooke and Canada Cup Junior Finals in Calgary.

 

Canada West Basketball

The UNBC Timberwolves are on the road this weekend for their first Canada West basketball games of 2025.

The Timberwolves visit the Fraser Valley Cascades Friday (6:00 and 8:00 PM) and the UBC Thunderbirds (4:00 and 6:00 PM) on Saturday.

The UNBC women are 3-5 while the UNBC men sit 1-7.

Fraser Valley is 7-3 (women) and 4-6 (men).

The (8-29) Raptors continue a 3-game road trip tonight (Thursday 4:00) in Cleveland against the Eastern Conference-leading (32-4) Cavaliers.

NFL: 

The NFL playoffs begin this weekend.

There are two games Saturday; LA Chargers at Houston (1:30) followed by Pittsburgh at Baltimore (5:00).

Three more games kick off on Sunday; Denver at Buffalo (10:00 AM), Green Bay at Philadelphia (1:30) and Washington at Tampa Bay (5:00).

The Monday night game (January 13th) features Minnesota at LA Rams (5:00).
