An opening date for the Prince George Outdoor Ice Oval remains to be determined as temperatures stay unsteady.
A good base has nearly been completed using hose floods, and are about ready to switch to their water truck to make a nicer surface, then polish with a Zamboni.
Ice Oval Society President, Kathy Lewis isn’t holding her breath on them opening soon.
“If we continue to have the weather we’re having right now, with the temperatures between minus 5 and minus 10, we would definitely be open in the next few days.”
“Unfortunately the weather report is looking like we’re going to get some warm weather, and we’ll have to stop oval operations until it gets cooler again.”
Lewis added over the last couple years they’ve been opening late, with last year opening well into January.
The way the weather patterns are going, she says they’re pretty well opening later and later each year.
Lewis says the community has been fairly positive about the delay with people checking on the work being done and interest on social media, but understand the weather needing to be appropriate.
While they’re doing ok for volunteers, she says they could always use more, which anyone interested can contact them through their website.
