The City of Prince George could be hosting a national sporting event towards the end of this decade.
At last night’s (Monday) meeting, City Council directed administration to submit a letter of intent to bid to host two Special Olympics Canada Games.
These would be for the 2028 Winter Games and 2030 Summer Games.
“We recently received a copy of both bid packages, and submitting a letter of intent is the first step,” said Manager of Event Services Debbie Heywood.
“This will allow us with an opportunity to connect directly to Special Olympics Canada and determine if it is the right opportunity for our community as well as provide us with any necessary assistance in preparation for the bid.”
The letter of intent will be written by staff from the City and Tourism Prince George.
The next steps will be to coordinate an internal team across various departments to review and assess both bid opportunities, as well as to meet with Special Olympics Canada to determine the feasibility of putting in a bid.
This upcoming summer, Prince George will host the Special Olympics BC Summer Games, which Heywood says gives them an opportunity to prepare for hosting the Canada games.
