City Council to consider Security Camera pilot program

Prince George City Council will consider a security camera pilot program at tomorrow’s (Monday) meeting.

At its meeting on September 24th, 2024, the City’s Standing Committee on Public Safety passed a pair of resolutions to recommend council considers the program, and that administration provide information on potential funding sources.

The attached joint proposal from Downtown Prince George and the Chamber of Commerce is requesting $40,000 towards the hard costs of executing the initial pilot program, which includes camera equipment, security monitoring services, installation and communications.

According to a report that will be presented to City Council, staff have made efforts to source grant funding opportunities in line with the scope of the proposal, but to date, no grant program has been identified as a match.

The report says Council could consider using the Council Contingency fund to support the request.

However, City Council only has $35,750 remaining in the fund for 2024, meaning they would be short $4,250 for the project.

If Council decides to use the Council Contingency fund for the project, the remaining $4,250 could be deferred to the 2025 budget, or Council could direct administration to fund the remaining balance from the 2024 operating budget.

Council also has the option to defer consideration to a future meeting, direct further research into the proposal, or do nothing with it.

Other items to be discussed tomorrow includes a look at some options for the Downtown Civic Core, and a potential bid for the Special Olympics Canada Games in either 2028 or 2030.
