A Fort Saint James man has been issued a $3,000 fine and a nine-month probation order from the BC Conservation Officer Service after hunting a moose at night.
According to a Facebook post, the incident occurred in September of 2021 when Conservation Officers and the RCMP responded to a complaint along Necoslie Forest Service Road, near Fort Saint James.
After the suspect was located the investigation determined the moose had been shot from the road with vehicle headlights used to illuminate the animal.
The Conservation Office seized the moose and distributed it to Nak’azdli First Nation members.
Francois Prince pleaded guilty in court to hunting with an illumination device.
“We’d like to thank the public for their prompt report to the RAPP line, which allowed officers to respond immediately,” said Sgt. Stuart Bates, in the post.
“We hope this sentence will deter others from similar illegal activity.”
Part of Prince’s probation includes a school presentation on safe hunting practices.
