Spruce Kings earn weekend split on the Island

The Prince George Spruce Kings’ new addition helped the team split their weekend on the Island.

Colin Reay, making his first start with the Spruce Kings since being acquired from Vernon earlier this week, was the star for the Spruce Kings, making 37 saves in a 2-1 win over the Victoria Grizzlies on Friday.

Nicolas Papineau and Skogen Schrott scored for the Spruce Kings in the second period.

Stone Rolston added one on the powerplay for Victoria, but that was the only goal for the 742 fans at the Q Centre to cheer for.

Reay stood strong again on Saturday, although the Spruce Kings fell 4-3 to the Cowichan Valley Capitals.

Reay made 30 saves in the losing effort.

The game was tied at two heading into the third, with Spruce Kings goals coming from former Capital Brock Cummings and Kazumo Sasaki.

Camden Bajzer scored the eventual winner and Ben Portner sealed the win with an empty netter for the Captials, sending 1,209 fans at the Cowichan Community Centre home happy.

Mason Loewen scored for the Spruce Kings with just 18 seconds to go, but it was too little, too late for Prince George.

Saturday’s box score is here.

The Spruce Kings (8-14-2-1) are sitting ninth in the BCHL’s Coastal Conference.
