Day one of Community Christmas is in the books at My Prince George Now, 94.3 the Goat, and Country 97fm.
Throughout the first day of the annual fundraiser, many donations have been brought to our radio station, benefitting the St. Vincent de Paul Society here in Prince George.
“It’s turned out really spectacular, a lot more generosity than what I thought we would get, because of the state of the economy and the state of people’s cost of living going up,” said Bernie Gould, a now 44-year volunteer with the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
A trend Gould noticed throughout the day was fewer, but bigger than normal donations.
“We noticed that a lot of people who maybe gave $100 gave $150, and some people that gave $1,000 gave $1,500,” she explained.
“That’s touching that they realize how many other people are in need as well.”
The generosity of some of the younger Prince George residents stood out to Gould today.
“It was a teaching lesson when a dad brought a six and a four-year-old to give $50 each from them to show that they would get toys for kids,” Gould said.
“I think that’s a great way to show that there are other people a little bit less fortunate.”
Community Christmas will continue tomorrow (Thursday) and we will be accepting donations of food, toys, and clothing.
Gould added cash donations are king.
“We can buy then, and contrary to what people believe, not all the money goes out at Christmas,”
“January and February are very heavy donations required [months] to see them through the worst part of the winter, and a little bit of over-spending maybe at Christmas like everyone of us does.”
