Fundraiser for Mavrik’s battle with cancer exceeds expectations

Burgers were flying on Saturday in support of 2-year-old Mavrik, who’s been battling cancer since late October.

He was diagnosed with neuroblastoma and has been receiving an out-pour of support from the community of Prince George since then, with the latest showing at Carl’s Jr.’s Fundraising Day.

Mavrik’s father, Derek Turnbull says the fundraiser exceeded the family’s expectations.

“The turnout from the community, the effort and all the work that the employees and owners did from Carl’s Jr. was just incredible.”

“I stopped in there with my kids, and they were basically at capacity for almost every minute of the day.”

Turnbull says after the fundraiser and a donation match made, a total of around $7,000 was raised.

Mavrik started his second round of chemotherapy and is in good spirits, playing hockey in his room and watching the Prince George Cougar games on an iPad.

Turnbull added it seems he’s kicked most of the infections that followed the first round of chemo.

Outside of the fundraising day, the community has also been showing support through a GoFundMe.
