As Canada Post and the Postal Workers Union contract talks remain at a standstill, the postal service has reportedly taken a “scare tactic” approach.
Canada Post began temporarily laying off workers, starting with those on short-term assignment, with actual layoffs across the country including letter carriers.
Local CUPW 812 President, Rick Harris says he found out about the layoffs a couple of days ago.
“I haven’t heard of this before, and it doesn’t really make much sense to me considering why would you lay off somebody who’s not currently working?” says Harris.
“I don’t really know. It’s unusual from my experience, and it doesn’t make a ton of sense to me.”
Harris says the layoffs haven’t affected the over 200 postal workers across Prince George, Vanderhoof, Mackenzie, Burns Lake and, Fraser Lake, and hasn’t heard of any across the province.
He added this shouldn’t change their stance as their National President, Jan Simpson said they’re waiting, willing, and ready to go back to the table as soon as Canada Post is.
