Prince George area to experience coldsnap through next week

Double-digit negative temperatures could be the theme over the next little while in the Prince George area.

Today (Friday), temperatures will be topping out at about minus 9, with 4-8 centimetres of snow tonight and tomorrow (Saturday), and could total up to 10 centimetres.

Meteorologist, Matt Loney says snow won’t be the only factor making Saturday feel cold.

“Temperatures tomorrow will be getting up to around minus 10 to minus 11, but with that north wind picking up, we should see wind chill values getting down to around minus 20.”

Temperatures this time of year usually sit at a max of minus 2 and a minimum of minus 8, putting us 8-10 degrees below that for the coming week.

Loney says models show a fairly significant cold air mass outbreak over western Canada, saying it’s a question of how far west and south it gets.

He notes the northern part of the province will have a good amount of cold air, with a potential of additional snow around Wednesday.

Loney notes it seems we’re heading into a La Nina winter in terms of temperatures, at least in the short term, and will have to wait and see how long this cold outbreak lasts.
