Theatre NorthWest will be showing a critically acclaimed play starting today.
Kim’s Convenience follows the Kim family who navigates the challenges of running a convenience store in Toronto and comes with laughter, and cultural insights.
James Yi explains how he ended up as the director and actor for the play.
“Ins Choi, the writer, suggested my name for directing the show. I knew going into it there would be a possibility that I would have to play Appa and direct, just because it’s very difficult to find people who can play Appa. It’s just such a specific role.”
Yi says having to take on both positions was an unknown for him, as cases like this rarely happen, adding this is probably the one show where he can pull this off.
The play’s title may ring some bells for some, as it was also a TV show that aired on CBC.
While there are similarities, the play isn’t locked to a certain genre, allowing it to go to places where the TV show may not.
The play will continue until December 18th, with more information and tickets on Theatre NorthWest’s website here.
