The (9-6-3) Vancouver Canucks begin a 6-game road trip Saturday night (4:00) against the Senators in Ottawa.

There are 10 Thursday games in the NHL with three Canadian teams in action: Edmonton hosts Minnesota, Calgary entertains the New York Rangers and Ottawa is home against Vegas.

The Washington Capitals have placed Alex Ovechkin on injured reserve.

The 39-year-old sniper is listed week-to-week with a lower left leg injury.

Ovechkin is 27 goals shy of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894.

WHL:

The (12-5-3-2) Prince George Cougars wrap up a 6-game homestand when they entertain the (11-10-1) Kamloops Blazers Friday night at 7:00.

The Cougars are first in the 5-team B.C. Division by two points over the (12-7-2-1) Victoria Royals.  (Victoria lost 5-1 Wednesday to the Oil Kings in Edmonton)

The Blazers are third, six points back of PG.

The (6-11-2-1) Prince George Spruce Kings host the (8-11-1) Spruce Grove Saints Saturday night at 6:00.

BC Elite Hockey League:  

The (9-3-2-1) Under-18 Cariboo Cougars compete at the BC Elite Hockey League showcase in Abbotsford this weekend.

They play the (7-4-2-1) Greater Vancouver Canadians Saturday morning at 10:30 and the last place (0-12) Thompson Blazers Sunday morning at 9:30.

Cariboo is in first place in the 8-team Under-18 Division by a point over (9-3-0-1) Valley West and (9-3-0-1) Fraser Valley.

CFL:

The BC Lions are looking for a new head coach after sacking Rick Campbell.

The team had a 38-30 record in the regular-season and 2-3 in the playoffs over Campbell’s four seasons at the helm.

Meanwhile, the Lions promoted Ryan Rigmaiden to general manager and Neil McEvoy to VP of football operations.

 

NFL: (Week 12)

The (8-2) Pittsburgh Steelers visit the (2-8) Cleveland Browns tonight (Thursday 5:15) to start the 12th week of the NFL season.

The Steelers are riding a 5-game winning streak.

High School Football:

The College Heights Cougars play Vernon Saturday morning at 11:00 at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver in the Provincial High School Football AA varsity semifinals.

College Heights advanced following a 22-15 victory over Holy Cross in the quarterfinals.

Canada West Basketball

The UNBC Timberwolves host the UBC-Okanagan Heat Friday night at 6:00 (women) and 8:00 (men) and Saturday night at 5:00 and 7:00 in the Timberwolves final league games until January 10th.

UNBC is 1-5 (women) and 0-6 (men).

UBCO is 3-3 (women) and 2-4 (men).
