Three Prince George City Councillors are calling for the establishment of an Annual Citizen Recognition Program.
At tomorrow’s meeting, Council will discuss a Notice of Motion on the topic, which was brought forward by Councillor Kyle Sampson, and supported by Councillors Cori Ramsay and Tim Bennett.
“While “Freedom of the City” is the highest honour the Council can bestow on someone, it is generally reserved for extremely rare and unique circumstances,” Sampson wrote in the discussion portion of the Notice of Motion.
“That doesn’t mean there aren’t folks who are regularly making our community better in all sorts of ways that shouldn’t be meaningfully recognized. An annual recognition medal program would give the City of PG the opportunity to consistently celebrate and acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of those who go above and beyond, often without expecting anything in return.”
One of the motion’s attached includes directing City Administration to establish a select committee, which would be comprised of four members of City Council and three external members of the public.
The motion said a draft term of reference would be presented to Council by the end of the third quarter of 2025, while aiming to launch the program for the 2026 cycle.
Also included in the Notice of Motion is a review of the existing Service Recognition Awards program, which recognizes City employees who complete milestone lengths of service.
Other items to be discussed tomorrow includes support for the Santa Claus parade, and a report on significant capital projects.
