The Prince George Hospice Palliative Care Society’s Rec Room is home to a new wind phone.
The phone, which helps visitors speak to lost loved ones, was built and gifted by the Prince George Men’s Shed.
Men’s Shed Member, Andrew Darbyshire explains where the idea came from.
“I was down in Penticton on holidays, and I went to visit the Penticton Men’s Shed and they had a wind phone.”
“I learned it from those guys, they sent me some plans, and then I looked it up online and it started in Japan I believe with actual phone booths where you can go in and talk to somebody that you’ve lost, and I thought it’d be a great idea to have around here.”
The Men’s Shed plans to add two more wind phones, one in the Ancient Forest and the other at the Lheidli T’enneh reserve cemetery, which they hope to have installed by Spring.
Jason Gillis, who’s another member of Men’s Shed said they try to give back to the community with a lot of the stuff the do or build, with the materials either being donated or paid for out of pocket.
The Prince George Men’s Shed is seeking more rotary phones in an effort to build more wind phones.
