A Prince George based veteran will be running in the early hours of Remembrance Day for a fourth year.
Derk Grooten came up with the 11K on Remembrance Day Run, which has seen a growth in support year over year, even having 32 other community members join in last year.
Grooten explains his decision to run 11 kilometres at 2:00am.
“I was looking for another time in the day that I could do it and then I thought we remember on the 11th hour of the day, the armistice came into affect in Paris,”
“I thought the 11th hour in Paris is actually 2 o’clock in BC so, why not run at 2:00am?”
Grooten says the run is a way of sacrificing your time and comfort, adding to the experience of remembering the hero’s lost that secured our freedom.
Someone from Victoria called and asked if they could do the run in their community, which he says would be the best thing ever to spread this initiative across the province.
He adds it’s another way to to show the younger generation there’s more ways of remembering.
Grooten says anyone able to run 11 kilometres in the early hours can join him at the aquatic centre and to dress for the weather, noting it’s a group run, not a race.
